Best breweries in Cape Town and the Winelands

Think Cape Town is only for wine lovers? Think again! The city’s now also the craft beer capital of South Africa, and awesome breweries are popping up all over the place. They’ll serve you a pint of the best and most unique beers, often over pretty tasty meals, all in the type of buzzing environment you’d expect from a craft brewery.

The best way to experience more than one Cape Town craft brewery is on our Craft Beer Safari – we’ll take you along to some of the coolest spots in town, organise everything ahead of time, and save you the hassle of making your way back when you’ve had a few!

Devil’s Peak Brewery

Devil’s Peak Brewery makes some of the city’s best and most accessible craft beers in Cape Town. It was one of the first craft beers to break through to widespread distribution, yet it has maintained its small brewery charm in both beer and atmosphere at its Salt River taproom. The taproom at Devil’s Peak Brewery is a hive of activity most nights of the week, and with delicious food and a full range of beers, there are few better spots for craft beer lovers to pop by.

Ukhamba Beerworx

Ukhamba Beerworx bills itself as the only modern beer with an African twist. Their range of craft beers hit all the right notes, whether you’re a fan of lager or saison, and their new venue in the V&A Waterfront’s Maker’s Landing Cruise Terminal is the perfect spot to gather to give their unique beers the respect they deserve.

Jack Black’s Taproom

Jack Black’s Brewing Co. was one of the first companies in South Africa to get their craft beer in customers’ hands at the famous Old Biscuit Mill market. The company has grown significantly since then, and it continues to produce some of the finest craft beers in the country. Their relatively new taproom has also fast become a popular destination to sample the full Jack Black’s range over great food and often set to live entertainment.

Stellenbrau Brewery

Stellenbrau claims the accolade of being the first craft brewery in Stellenbosch, and they’ve kept their reputation strong for close to a decade now. You can now purchase their beers at liquor shops and bars around the country, but the best place to try them all is still at source at the Stellenbrau Restaurant and Taproom.

Cape Brewing Company

Cape Brewing Company, better known as CBC, is another craft beer success story. Their brewery is on the popular Spice Route Destination in Paarl. There you can sample CBC’s Weiss, ale, lager and pilsner in the most idyllic setting over a pizza or burger. There’s not much more a craft beer fan could wish for!

Stellenbosch Brewing Company

Stellenbosch Brewing Company makes some delicious beers, and if you find yourself out in the Winelands, you’ll have to make a turn at Joostenberg. There you can drink a perfectly brewed beer at The Stellies Taproom, which offers a tranquil, family-friendly environment in a farm-style setting.

Shackleton Brewing Company Taproom

Described by many as the hidden gem of Cape Town’s craft beer scene, Shackleton Brewing Company is a must-visit when in the city. They make a variety of superb beers, including a stout, red ale, kölsch and pale ale – and if you’d like to sample them all, their vibey taproom in Salt River is the place to go.
